Strap yourselves in, because as of January 14, Mercury is back in retrograde to wreak havoc on our energy and emotions. Haven’t we been through enough?
We’ve enlisted our expert, Janelle Palibrk, the founder of Melbourne based crystal and infused-candle company, Myles Gray to guide us through our war against the bad juju coming our way over the next three weeks.
Godspeed, February 3.

What retrograde means and why we should pay attention to it?
Retrogrades happen because planets slow down and can appear to be moving backwards, Palibrk explains to Body+Soul.
“Retrogrades bring a lot of feelings up from the past and can result in miscommunications, set-backs and other difficulties, which is why it’s always good to pay attention to them, if you are feeling a little out of sorts the energy around you could be selfish have something to do with.”
Mercury in retrograde is the perfect time to be selfish. Zone in on self-awareness.
“Retrogrades generally play havoc on our energy, but if you can recognise your energy as miss guided and know how to realign you’ll be able to move through this retrograde without too much damage. You need to accept it for what it is and understand that some things aren’t meant to be.
“Be kind to yourself and move a little slower especially when decision making,” she says, adding that finding time in the everyday to centre and ground our energy will make us feel “so much better.”
Already stressed out? Remember, it’s just a phase, albeit a 21-day one.
What should we expect from this retrograde?
It’s a triple whammy thanks to Mercury, Venus and Uranus.
“In January we have three planets in retrograde at the same time, it is going to get a little worse before it gets better,” Palibrk admits. “We will have Mercury, Venus and Uranus in retrograde all at once and you’ll find a lot going wrong right now, especially miscommunications and tech errors.”
So, we’re not crazy? Phew!
“You are probably feeling the effects of mercury retrograde now mainly because we already have Uranus and Venus in retrograde, adding in mercury on Jan 14th will have three planets in retrograde at the same time, so while the start of the year has seemed pretty wild, it’s going to stay that way for a little longer, as you can always feel the energy effects of retrogrades before and after their set dates.”
We’re already exhausted. Are you already exhausted? As Palibrk previously mentioned, it’s not forever, so remember there is light at the end of the tunnel. “This retrograde ends on the 3rd of February, and by then everything should start to calm down,” she explains.
How can we prepare for it?
Get your crystals at the ready.
“Continue to live your life as normal and just be kinder to yourself, it’s really important to slow down and assess every situation you are in,” Palbrik says, and suggests we find out zen through meditation and sticking to a routine. She also advises we find time in our day for reflection.
“Don’t skip your self-care rituals, light some candles and really hone in on a few crystals to keep your energy grounded,” she insists.
Which crystals should we focus on during this time?
“I love raw crystals, they haven’t been manipulated by different heat or water techniques and have the most beautiful energy,” Palbrik, a crystals expert, tells B+S.
“I’ll be using all raw crystals in my healing practice this year, some powerful ones for January are Smokey Quartz, to ground your energy and help relieve feelings of anxiety.”
She also suggests Rainbow Moonstone, the perfect rock to welcome new beginnings and help us accept change.
And finally Pyrite, “to bring in an abundant energy and prosperity.”
