University of Northern Iowa senior Lauryn Wagner, a graduate of Notre Dame High School, helped the UNI women's rugby team reach the Final Four.

Lauryn Wagner grew up in a family that loves soccer.

Her father, John, is the head coach for the Notre Dame High School boys soccer team and has an extensive background in the Southeast Soccer Academy. Her younger brother, Carson, played on the Nikes’ Class 1A state championship team last spring.

As for Lauryn, her sport during her days at Notre Dame was golf, where she was a standout player for coach Lee Lundvall.

But rugby? Surely you jest. Wagner had never even seen a match before, let alone played in one.

Lo and behold, Wagner was recruited to join the University of Northern Iowa women’s rugby team, a program with a rich history of success.

Wagner, a senior forward for the Panthers, helped UNI qualify for the Collegiate Rugby XVs Championship Dec. 4-5 at Tennessee Rugby Park in Knoxville, Tennessee.
